It's official - with the release of Abodo's Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), Abodo's Vulcan timber is verified to store more carbon than is used in its production
It's been a lot of work in the making and now it's official: with the release of Abodo's Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) Abodo's Vulcan solid timber is proven to store 7.56kg+ of carbon for every square metre, more than 2x carbon emitted during the manufacturing process.
This means carbon is essentially locked in the wood during its useful life. And we think that's pretty exciting news!
How Do I Use an EPD?
EPDs provide lifecycle data for calculating the impacts of wood products at a building level. This data may be used by specifiers and developers to calculate and present the environmental impacts of particular construction projects.
The New Zealand Green Building Council currently allows up to three points to be awarded for use of EPDs in Greenstar projects, as of the ’Green Star Design and As Built New Zealand v1.0 Submission Guidelines’.
Other green building certification frameworks such as LEED, Green
Building Council of Australia and Living Building Certification also
have points available for products with an EPD.
How Much Carbon Does Vulcan Cladding Store?
Want to make a climate difference? Start using building materials that store carbon, rather than emit carbon during their manufacture.
Each square metre of Vulcan Cladding stores 7.56kg+ of carbon. That makes an important difference to the embodied carbon in your building.
Reducing Carbon Footprint, A Case Study: Cardrona Cabin
Abodo's Cardrona Cabin makes extensive use of Vulcan Cladding, Screening, Panelling and structural elements.
Predominantly manufactured from glue laminated sections, the Vulcan timber product stores a considerable amount of CO2e.
Over 9 tonnes of carbon is stored in the Vulcan timber elements
alone, dramatically offsetting the small amounts of concrete and
structural steel used in the building.
Comparing Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for Different Timbers
Almost all solid timbers store carbon - but their carbon footprint can vary vastly.
With the help of global expert Callum Hill we have released a report
comparing the EPD's (Environmental Product Declarations) for a range of
natural and modified timbers.
