New Zealand’s first “Living Building” home will soon be underway at Taylor’s Mistake in Christchurch.
Architectural designer Craig Jarvis is building the home for his family in accordance with the principles of the Living Building Challenge (LBC).
In accordance with LBC principles, it is Jarvis’s goal to achieve perfect harmony between environmental impact, economy and beauty.
The small but efficient 88 square metre home will be “triple net zero” in terms of water, waste and energy. Curved laminated beams, and an extensive green roof will cloak the home, and a modular portable kitchen will allow cooking inside and outside.
It is expected that Abodo’s Sand Decking will be used on the exterior deck area. More than 150 Living Buildings have been built around the world, but only one has been completed in New Zealand – a commercial building, designed by Jasmax for the Tuhoe Iwi.
Abodo Wood had significant involvement with the Tuhoe build – supplying Cladding and Decking, along with FSC® certified radiata pine clearwood for the interior.
Responding to customer demand for greater fixing depth, builders will get an extra 10mm where they need it most. Replacing the 65mm, the new 75mm Cladding Screw is arriving in September 2026.
An enhanced Protector coating formulation, is being rolled out. Factory coating of the new Protector – Patina is now happening, with Straw and Teak changing over in August.
Abodo introduces a breakthrough that reshapes what’s possible in timber design: Vaaro Fire, an ultra-durable, fire compliant timber* - all from one trusted manufacturer.
Lead times for our main Vulcan® Cladding, Decking, Screening and Panelling lines, temporarily extended.
