A pandemic project for Assembly Architects, Crafted Crib, was built by a small carpentry team when social restrictions were still in place. Its timber-dominant aesthetic runs right through to its pile foundations, a structural solution chosen to allow tradespeople to work in ‘bubbles’ once the shell of the home was complete.

Without the carbon weight of a concrete slab, this structure lends the home excellent environmental credentials, which are furthered by its Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certified Vulcan WB10 180x20 vertical weatherboards. These weatherboards provide the same level of robustness as old growth timbers such as cedar, but without the cost to biodiversity or the carbon footprint.

As it is used as a holiday home, the performance of the weatherboards was also a key consideration, as they are able to withstand extreme changes in temperature without warping or bending, allowing stress-free enjoyment of Crafted Crib for its owners.

Coated in a rustic Iron Vitriol finish, the exterior merges beautifully with the soft brown of the rocky alpine vistas that surround it. Iron Vitriol makes use of iron sulphate, a proven surface treatment that works by reacting with the tannins in the wood, causing the surface to change to a brown-grey or silver-grey colour, depending on the timber species used. Once treated with Iron Vitriol, any cracks and damage to wood surfaces will be naturally resealed by the stain. It is also low toxicity and generally contains no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), making it a safe choice for families.

High level windows let in light and ridgeline views, while also allowing for privacy from neighbours. This is made possible by the monopitch roof, a necessary departure from the covenants of the subdivision.

In terms of form, Crafted Crib is made up of three box-like shapes situated to take in different aspects of the residential, yet alpine environment, while also providing shelter from the wind for outdoor living spaces. With surprises through every well-placed window, the timber-heavy design connects with the elements outdoors while providing a series of warm ambient spaces to retreat to after a day in the mountains.

The resulting understated look is in keeping with the home’s beautifully humble, timber-lined interiors. Abodo Screening battens mask the joins in the plywood on the kitchen and living ceilings and walls, providing a linear aspect to this family zone. Skipped sawn-finish French Oak flooring hints at a sense of age, while Pounamu green benchtops and brass fixtures and fittings add depth and shine.
