Rotorua Airport - Bay of Plenty, New Zealand

The design of the terminal takes inspiration from Rotorua's landscape, including the surrounding lakes and Mokoia Island.

The shape of Mokoia Island is reflected throughout the design with large windows framing the island to make Rotorua the hero, rather than the building itself.

Small scale interventions transform the experience of the terminal.

Entries, exits and interior transition spaces were the focus of the design, which includes details in timber drawing reference from Te Rotorua nui ā Kahumatamomoe (Lake Rotorua), Wai (water) movement and Kōura (freshwater crayfish).

A combination of timber, concrete, and glass is used across the developments, for a contemporary look that is true to Rotorua Lakes Council's 'Wood First' policy.

Abodo’s locally sourced and rapidly renewable eco-timber, including Vulcan Panelling and Screening, was used for the arrivals hall, rental car booths, entries and exits.

The $4.9 million redevelopment creates a facility that is not only fit for purpose and meets earthquake strengthening regulations, but provides an outstanding first impression for visitors to Rotorua.
