NEW / An enhanced Protector formulation is being rolled out. Find out more below.

Protector uses the latest in water borne oil technology combining refined plant oils, UV protection, advanced water barrier composition and an enhanced fungicidal package for superior exterior performance.

Please note – if timber already has a coating on it, please check suitability with us prior to purchasing.

Approximate coverage 6-8 m2/L first coat, 10-12 m2/L second coat (smooth dressed timber and hardwoods will have higher or lower coverage rates respectively).

Features

Penetrating: Non film-forming coating sits into the timber surface, which means superior performance and easier maintenance.

Low VOC: Water Borne formulation is better for people and the environment. Water clean-up.

FAQs

How do I know whether my timber has been coated with the original Protector or the new Protector formulation?

During the transition period, both formulations may be in the market.

From mid-July, factory coating of Protector – Patina will be using the new formulation, with other colours phased in over the rest of 2026. You can check our website for updates or contact us at time of order.

When Protector has been purchased from us, the difference will be seen in the packaging. The original Protector was supplied in 4L and 10L bottles, while the new formulation is supplied in 1L and 10L pails with an updated packaging appearance.

If you're unsure which product was originally used on your project, contact us with project details and we can help identify the coating system.

Can I apply the new Protector over timber previously coated with the original Protector?

Yes. The new Protector formulation has been designed as the ongoing replacement for the original Protector coating. Existing projects coated with the original formulation can be maintained using the new Protector during future recoat cycles.

As with any maintenance coating, clean and prepare the timber surface before applying a fresh coat to dry timber.

Will the colour look different from the original Protector?

The new formulation has been designed to closely match the existing Protector colour range. However, minor colour variation may occur due to differences in formulation and weathering of the existing timber surface.

Protector's enhanced formulation provides improved colour consistency. We recommend testing on a small area or requesting a current sample if colour matching is critical.

Does the new Protector flake or peel?

No. Protector is a penetrating timber coating designed to nourish and protect the wood without creating a surface film. Unlike many traditional coatings, it erodes gradually with weathering rather than flaking or peeling.

This makes ongoing maintenance simpler, as recoating generally requires cleaning and preparation rather than extensive sanding or stripping.

Can the new Protector formulation be used indoors?

Yes. The new formulation is suitable for interior applications such as ceiling and wall paneling, replacing the need for the Protector - Hybrid coating in many situations. For high wear areas such as bathrooms or handrails, a clear polyurethane or acrylic coating should be applied over the top to provide additional protection. Protector is not recommended for flooring or cabinetry. Refer to the Product Data Sheet or contact us for more information.

Has the new Protector formulation been tested for exterior durability?

Yes. The formulation has undergone extensive exterior exposure testing, including natural weathering trials and accelerated weathering programmes. Comparative testing has also been undertaken against competing timber coating systems to assess durability and colour retention performance.

Which Abodo products can Protector be specified with?

Protector is designed for use across the Abodo range, including cladding, screening and panelling applications in both Vulcan and Vaaro products. It can also be specified for selected decking applications in a clear finish.

What maintenance should be expected over the life of the project?

There is no change to the recommended maintenance schedule between the original and new Protector coatings.

At a minimum, cladding must be cleaned regularly annually with mild detergent and soft brush, rinse with water. Optionally apply a further coat of Protector after approx 12 months of weathering as this will extend time between re-coats. For brushed finish apply a third coat 1-12 months after install.

Make a maintenance assessment every two summers.

Maintenance intervals will vary according to colour, exposure, orientation and project location, but typically we recommend a re-coat every 2-4 years of Protector to clean, dry timber.
