Abodo Vulcan Primed weatherboards painted a deep blue give this Beachlands house a Cape Cod aesthetic, while also referencing the 1950s bach that once stood in its place.

Located on the Eastern outskirts of Auckland, Beachlands is an aptly named suburb that was once popular with holidaymakers and now has a growing population of permanent residents.

The site this house is located on, with uninterrupted views of the Hauraki Gulf and Waiheke Island, once housed a 1950s bach. The new owners considered renovating the bach but ultimately decided to start again with a new house designed by local architect Lisa Day of Donnell Day Architects.

The homeowners asked for a Cape Cod style house that paid some dues to the old bach, which had features they were fond of. Weatherboard timber cladding was an obvious choice for achieving this style, and Lisa specified Abodo Vulcan Primed weatherboards both internally and externally.

On the exterior, these are painted Resene Foundry, which is the same deep blue colour of the original bach. Internally, the weatherboards give a relaxed aesthetic, reminiscent of baches that have had rooms added on, with the exterior wall still visible inside.

“We used Abodo Vulcan Primed weatherboards on this project, because it is a natural timber product, with low toxicity and a high level of durability and stability,” says Lisa.

From concept stage, the clients expressed a wish for a high quality cladding product that would also be able to take a dark colour on the exterior. They were interested in longevity, performance and sustainability for their exposed cliff top location. The Abodo Vulcan weatherboards ticked all the boxes, without adding cost.

Vulcan Primed Cladding is created from thermally modified, locally grown plantation timber. The thermal modification process gives the timber enhanced stability and reduces the resin content, which means darker colours can be used without worrying about heat exposure.

It also provides natural durability - important for an exposed site such as this one - without the need for preservatives, which also makes the product safe for indoor use. Being factory pre-primed saves time and effort at the painting stage.

“We have been impressed with the performance. Even with a dark paint finish the timber hasn’t moved and it has resulted in a high quality building envelope,” says Lisa.

All Abodo products are Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) Certified, which means they come from responsibly managed sources. They are also CodeMark Certified for guaranteed acceptance by building authorities and covered by a 15 year Built to Last Warranty.
