Independent weathering studies indicate the next generation of Protector ™ achieves improved colour retention compared with the previous formulation.

Results of two independent weathering studies indicate the next generation of Protector ™ may achieve up to 20% improved colour retention compared with the previous formulation.
We know people choose timber because they love its warmth, texture, and natural beauty. The goal with Protector™ was to help it look better for longer while retaining the natural character of timber.
To evaluate the next generation of Protector, we undertook two independent weathering studies.
Study 1 / Allunga Exposure Testing
The first was conducted by the team at Allunga Exposure Laboratory in Queensland, Australia, using Altrac accelerated natural weathering technology that concentrates and tracks sunlight to simulate years of outdoor exposure in a shortened timeframe. Depending on seasonal conditions, Allunga's methodology is designed to deliver acceleration rates of approximately 400-800% compared with natural weathering.

Study 2 / QUV Accelerated Weathering
The second study used QUV accelerated weathering equipment to expose coated timber samples to repeated cycles of ultraviolet light and moisture. Widely used throughout the coatings industry, QUV testing helps evaluate how finishes respond to prolonged extreme UV exposure and environmental stress. Together, these studies provide valuable insight into coating durability, colour stability, and overall appearance retention under demanding weathering conditions.
After 2-4 Years* Equivalent Simulated Weathering
The next generation of Protector was developed to further enhance colour durability and appearance retention. To understand the impact of these improvements, original and new Protector formulations were tested side-by-side under identical accelerated weathering conditions.
Following accelerated exposure, the new Protector - Nero coating retained a darker, more consistent appearance than the original formulation, with lower visible colour change and improved overall appearance stability.
Compared with the alternative black coating included in the study, the new Protector - Nero retained greater visual depth and consistency throughout the exposure period, resulting in a more uniform weathered appearance. (Based on independent visual assessment.)

After 2,500 Hours of Accelerated UV Exposure
While outdoor weathering studies provide real-world exposure, QUV testing isolates the effects of ultraviolet light and moisture. By repeatedly subjecting coated timber samples to controlled UV and condensation cycles, the test provides an indication of how coatings may respond to prolonged environmental exposure. The next generation of Protector demonstrated improved colour stability compared with both the original formulation and selected alternative coating systems when assessed after 2,500 hours of accelerated exposure.
The enhanced Protector - Nero formulation maintained a more consistent appearance after prolonged accelerated UV exposure than the original coating and the alternative black coating included in the assessment (below).
Consistent appearance under prolonged UV exposure
Alongside alternative coating systems, the next generation of Protector™ demonstrated strong colour stability throughout 2,500 hours of accelerated UV exposure. This performance supports a more consistent and enduring timber appearance as exterior surfaces weather.
The next generation of Protector™ was developed to further support the long-term beauty of Abodo timbers. Across two independent weathering studies, the enhanced formulation demonstrated improved colour retention and appearance stability compared with the original Protector coating, while also performing strongly when assessed alongside alternative coating systems.
While all exterior timbers naturally weather over time, these results indicate that the next generation of Protector can help maintain a more consistent and enduring appearance across a range of exterior applications.
